چکیده

We examine the dynamical effects on disk stars of a “long bar” in the Milky Way by inserting a triaxial rotating bar into an axisymmetric disk+bulge+dark halo potential and integrating 3-D orbits of 10 tracer stars over a period of 5 Gyr. The long bar has been detected via “clump giants” in the IR by López-Corredoira et al. (2007), and is estimated to have semi-major axes of (3.9×0.6×0.1) kpc and a mass of 6×10 M⊙. We find such a structure has striking effects on disk orbits. The long bar is able to move considerable inner disk material into prominent stellar streams in the solar neighborhood, apparently inconsistently with observations; furthermore it can eject inner disk material to considerable heights (several kpc) above the Galactic plane in a manner which may be inconsistent with observations. The effects of the long bar can be greatly ameliorated by reducing its density and/or making it considerably thicker vertically. These effects are under continuing study.

The Maximum Optical Depth Towards Bulge Stars From Axisymmetric Models of the Milky Way

It has been known that recent microlensing results towards the bulge imply mass densities that are surprisingly high given dynamical constraints on the Milky Way mass distribution. We derive the maximum optical depth towards the bulge that may be generated by axisymmetric structures in the Milky Way, and show that observations are close to surpassing these limits. This result argues in favor of...

Another Bar in the Bulge

A map of the projected density of the old stellar population of the Galactic Bulge region is reconstructed using 2MASS data. By making a combination of the H and K photometric bands , it is possible to overcome the effect of reddening, and thus penetrate the inner structure of the Galactic Bulge. The main structure in the map corresponds to the well documented peanut shaped bar which is formed ...

The Properties of the Galactic Bar Implied by Gas Kinematics in the Inner Milky Way

Longitude-velocity (l−V ) diagrams of H I and CO gas in the inner Milky Way have long been known to be inconsistent with circular motion in an axisymmetric potential. Several lines of evidence suggest that the Galaxy is barred, and gas flow in a barred potential could be consistent with the observed “forbidden” velocities and other features in the data. We compare the H I observations to l−V di...

Solar Neighborhood Velocity Streams Induced by Recent Bar Growth

We find that a steady state bar induces transient features at low velocities in the solar neighborhood velocity distribution due to the initial response of the disk, following the growth of the bar. We associate these velocity streams with two quasi-periodic orbital families, librating around the stable x1(1) and x1(2) orbits near the bar’s outer Lindblad resonance (OLR). In a reference frame m...

Observational Evidence for a Bar in the Milky Way

Evidence from a variety of sources points towards the existence of a bar in the central few kpc of the Galaxy. The measurements roughly agree on the direction of the bar major axis, but other parameters (axis ratio, size, pattern speed) are still poorly determined. Current dynamical models are limited by the quality of hydro simulations, the degeneracy of stellar orbit models, stellar-kinematic...
